Anime Film Festival!

Beginning on Saturday March 18, the Library will be showing six of Hayao Miyazaki’s best known feature length movies.  Admission is free.  Everyone is welcome.  Come join us for the fantasy, magic, and wonder of the very best in animated film.

Many people would consider Hayao Miyazaki to be the greatest animated film director.  His twelve feature length animated films with Studio Ghibli are some of the best animated films ever created.  People brought up on Walt Disney, Max Fleischer, and Chuck Jones may not know his work; however Miyazaki is one of only two Japanese film directors who have received lifetime achievement awards from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (The other was the great director Akira Kurosawa).  Like his famous American counterparts, Miyazaki’s movies are primarily hand drawn cell animation.  His films have received over 78 Japanese, American, and other international cinema awards.  In 2002, American film critic Roger Ebert suggested that Miyazaki may be the best animation filmmaker in history, praising the depth and artistry of his films.  Walt Disney Studios has been distributing high quality English language editions of Miyazaki’s films to make them accessible to American Audiences.
